Our bi-monthly magazine, co-edited by Patricia Quinn, M.D. and Kathleen Nadeau, Ph.D., serves as a national forum and gathering place for women with AD/HD - to raise the awareness of women and girls with AD/HD and to address our concerns as individuals, as professional women, as wives, and as mothers of daughters with AD/HD.

ADDvance began publication in 1997 and has rapidly become a major influence in the growing recognition of the AD/HD issues unique to women and girls, making their disability much more visible. Women and girls with AD/HD have two struggles with invisibility - first, that AD/HD is an "invisible" disorder, and second, even worse, that AD/HD in women and girls has gone unnoticed - making them doubly invisible.

Recently, a group of primarily male medical AD/HD researchers spoke casually about women and men being identified with ADHD in nearly equal proportions! Only a few years ago, adult AD/HD was still in dispute. Many believed that only a small percentage of men continued to have symptoms in adulthood, and women's issues weren't even on the horizon. Now, only six years after Sari Solden's book, Women with Attention Deficit Disorder, only three years after ADDvance came into being, researchers now casually mention that men and women seem to have ADHD in approximately equal proportions, as if it were a well-accepted fact. What a long way we've come. We are proud that ADDvance has taken a leadership role in bringing this new perspective into being.

Our focus has also turned to making our daughters more visible. Pat Quinn, Ellen Littman and Kathleen Nadeau have written and published Understanding Girls with AD/HD in the hope that they can significantly raise awareness of the under-identification of girls. Women have sought diagnosis in ever-increasing numbers because they have the power to do so. Girls, however, must wait for parents, teachers or other professionals to notice their struggles. And, even if their struggles come to light, without better education of parents and professionals, their difficulties are often attributed to other things - lack of motivation, lack of intelligence, silliness, immaturity, or emotional problems are often the scapegoat explanations.
So, as we enter our fourth year of publication, we celebrate our growing visibility as women in the AD/HD community and dedicate ourselves to increasing the visibility and understanding of girls with AD/HD.
We welcome submissions of articles for consideration from clinicians, researchers, women with AD/HD, and women who are raising daughters with AD/HD. Through reporting research and publishing articles that inform, encourage and empower, we hope to fulfill our mission to improve the lives of women and girls with AD/HD.
Kathleen Nadeau, Ph.D. and Patricia Quinn, M.D. will serve together as contributing co-editors and publishers of ADDvance.
